The Impact of 9/11 and its Aftermath on Substance Use and Psychological Functioning: An Overview

This Essay provides a brief summary and evaluation of findings on the mental health and substance abuse consequences of the events of 9/11 throughout the nation and in United States\u27 cities. It also presents new data obtained from clients who entered substance abuse treatment in New York and other cities either before 9/11 or during a six-month period following the events. This Essay discusses how best to interpret these varying research findings. It concludes that crisis produces many responses and most people just coped with 9/11 in their individual ways

An Alternative to Temporary Staffing: Considerations for Workforce Practitioners

The temporary staffing industry has become a fixture of the US economy in recent decades, and workforce practitioners are increasingly noting the prevalence of temporary jobs in the low-skilled labor market. To ensure that these jobs are a stepping stone for job seekers -- and to tap into additional sources of revenue -- a growing number of social service organizations have launched their own staffing businesses, known as alternative staffing organizations (ASOs)

Rule learning enhances structural plasticity of long-range axons in frontal cortex.

Rules encompass cue-action-outcome associations used to guide decisions and strategies in a specific context. Subregions of the frontal cortex including the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) are implicated in rule learning, although changes in structural connectivity underlying rule learning are poorly understood. We imaged OFC axonal projections to dmPFC during training in a multiple choice foraging task and used a reinforcement learning model to quantify explore-exploit strategy use and prediction error magnitude. Here we show that rule training, but not experience of reward alone, enhances OFC bouton plasticity. Baseline bouton density and gains during training correlate with rule exploitation, while bouton loss correlates with exploration and scales with the magnitude of experienced prediction errors. We conclude that rule learning sculpts frontal cortex interconnectivity and adjusts a thermostat for the explore-exploit balance

Exploring Goodwill Impairment in Relation to Covid-19 and Critical Audit Matters

In 2019, Auditing Standard 3101 began requiring Critical Audit Matters (CAM) to be included in Auditors Reports. A CAM is any matter arising from the audit of the financial statements that has been communicated or is required to be communicated to the audit committee, and that relates to accounts or disclosures that are material to the financial statements, and that involves especially challenging, subjective, or complex auditor judgments. Goodwill impairment was identified as a CAM for many companies in 2019 and 2020. I examined the auditor's reports for 36 public companies that reported goodwill impairment for the period impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, from March 2020 to December 2020. Within this sample, Auditors issued 45 CAMs total, including 19 CAMs for goodwill. I examined the footnotes to determine whether restrictions and/or lockdowns imposed due to the pandemic were mentioned as causes of the impairment. A majority of them cited a decline in demand for their products/services and/or a decline in market capitalization as factors that led to testing goodwill for impairment. I examined the determining factors for inclusion in the Auditor's Report as a CAM. My analysis suggests that a CAM for goodwill impairment is more likely when the size of the impairment relative to goodwill is large and when the company is audited by a Big 4 accounting firm. Regression analysis indicates that CAMs are less likely for companies with international segments
